Meanders

The work in this series is influenced by fluid dynamics- the study of the winding and spiraling movement of fluids.

Some pieces follow a cartographic impulse, exploring movement and patterns on a global scale such as the Mississippi River Meander Belt, Finger Lakes watersheds, wind vortices and ocean gyres.

Other works arise from my interest in braided rugs. However in these collage/paintings the braids become unwoven, tangled or knotted along their way, almost as animate beings. Just as braided rugs were often constructed using remnants and scraps, in my collages the ephemera that I have collected over the years is interwoven with my photos of spider webs, bees, leaf clutter, bark patterns and the like. Unusual combinations and movement mirrors the way we seek to make sense of life- one weaves memories together and a pattern emerges, even though our experiences can often seem like a wild roller coaster of a ride.
